\n1. Koira on ylim\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4inen menoer\u00e4 muutenkin kuin ostohintansa suhteen. Vakuutus maksaa. El\u00e4inl\u00e4\u00e4k\u00e4ri maksaa (ja ilman vakuutusta sen varsinkin maksaa). Koiranruoka maksaa. Varsinkin jos huomaat, ettei marketinhyllyn normisapuska sovi (tai tied\u00e4t, ettei se yleens\u00e4k\u00e4\u00e4n koiralle hyv\u00e4ksi). <\/div>\n

\n2. El\u00e4m\u00e4 rajoittuu. P\u00e4iv\u00e4kin reissulle l\u00e4htiess\u00e4 on mietitt\u00e4v\u00e4, kuka koiraa hoitaa. Koiran kun t\u00e4ytyy p\u00e4\u00e4st\u00e4 ulos tekem\u00e4\u00e4n tarpeensa. Toki koiran voi ottaa mukaan, mutta viihtyyk\u00f6 koira autossa jos sattuu menem\u00e4\u00e4n paikkoihin, joihin sessu ei ole tervetullut. Mahdolliset pidemm\u00e4t matkat siihen p\u00e4\u00e4lle. \n3. Koira saattaa tuhota kotia. Me ei olla yhdenk\u00e4\u00e4n koiran pentuajasta selvitty ilman tuhoja. Englannink\u00e4\u00e4pi\u00f6terrieri onnistui jyrsim\u00e4\u00e4n sohvaa (ehk\u00e4 sohva oli heikkoa tekelett\u00e4). Rotikkapentumme alkoi ensin nuolla ja sitten jyrsi\u00e4 kokolattiamattoa ja tuloksena oli iso reik\u00e4 matossa. Staffimme jatkoi pieni\u00e4 tuhot\u00f6it\u00e4 koko el\u00e4m\u00e4ns\u00e4 ajan. Tietysti kouluttamalla saa ilkivaltaa minimoitua, mutta a) joskus koirat on vain koiria ja b) kotiin tullut karvakaveri saattaakin k\u00e4rsi\u00e4 kovasta eroahdistuksesta tai tuhovietist\u00e4. Ent\u00e4s sitten?<\/div>\n

\n4. Koira on sen el\u00e4m\u00e4n mittainen sitoomus. Koiranmyyntipalstoja selaillessa ihmettelin kovasti ihmisten myydess\u00e4 pentuja vanhempia koiria. Oli tullut eroa, ei riitt\u00e4nyt aikaa koiralle ja niin edelleen. El\u00e4m\u00e4 on ennalta-arvaamatonta. Se tulee ottaa huomioon koiraa hankkiessa. Ent\u00e4s jos koiralla esiintyy vaikeaa h\u00e4iri\u00f6k\u00e4ytt\u00e4ytymist\u00e4? <\/div>\n

\n5. Koira tarvitsee koulutusta. Peruskoulutuskin vie paaaljon aikaa. Ent\u00e4 jos vanhemmalla koiralla tulee ongelmak\u00e4ytt\u00e4ytymist\u00e4? Sen ratkominen vie kokemuksesta todella paljon aikaa, voimaa ja jopa rahaa. Ongelmak\u00e4ytt\u00e4ytyminen saattaa helpottua, mutta ei aina kokonaan ratkea.<\/div>\n

\nNoista kaikista huolimatta meill\u00e4 on ollut kuukautta lukuunottamatta aina koira viimeisen 12 vuoden ajan. Niiden terapeuttiset ominaisuudet on huomattu ainakin nyt sairastuttani. Tuskin tulee aikaa, jolloin meid\u00e4n perheess\u00e4 ei karvaturria olisi heiluttamassa h\u00e4nt\u00e4\u00e4.<\/p>\n

Meid\u00e4n teinipoju t\u00e4ytti t\u00e4n\u00e4\u00e4n yksi vuotta. Syyskuussa kirjoittamassani postauksessa “Kun koiran ottaminen tuntui virheelt\u00e4<\/a>” kerroin, kuinka englanninterrieripentu on ollut melkein kuin terapeutti minulle. Sit\u00e4 paijatessa kivut ovat unohtuneet ja sen vinkeille nauraminen on helpottanut hankalia p\u00e4ivi\u00e4. Olen my\u00f6s k\u00e4vellyt enemm\u00e4n (niit\u00e4 lyhyit\u00e4 matkoja), mit\u00e4 tuskin olisin tehnyt ilman koiranulkoilutuspakkoa. Meid\u00e4n “lirpunlarpunluppakorvan” toinen korva ei pysy koko aikaa pystyss\u00e4, vaikka sit\u00e4 kuinka teipattiin pystyasentoon. Eip\u00e4 silti. N\u00e4ill\u00e4 omilla voimavaroilla n\u00e4yttelyharrastus j\u00e4i nyt ajatuksen tasolle. Meid\u00e4n menoon kelpaa lurppakorvainen sessu varsin hyvin. <\/div>\n

\n1. Dog means extra expenses. Even not taking the purchase price account, insurance costs, vets cost (especially if you don’t have an insurance!). Dog food costs. Especially if you notice the supermarket brand does not suit your pup (or if you just know it is no good  for a dogs). <\/i><\/div>\n

\n2. Your everyday life is somewhat limited. Even for a day trips you need to arrange someone to look after the dog. Sure, you can take dog with you but is he ok in the car if you pop in to places where dogs are not welcome. What about longer trips and holidays? Who will look after the dog. Are you ok to leave it to a kennel? <\/i><\/div>\n

\n3. Dog can destroy your home. We have not gone through with any our dogs puppymonths without some damage to our home. Our englishtoyterrier has caused damage to our sofa. Our late rottweiler first started licking our living room carpet and then chewed a big hole to it. Our late staffie carried doing little destruction to our home all through her life. Sure, with obedience training you can minimize this but sometimes dogs are just dog and your furry friend might  suffer from separation anxiety or is just destructive pup. What then?<\/i><\/div>\n

\n4. Dog is for life. When I browse dogs for sale ads (or just looking at dog homes’ internet pages) I am filled with suspicion and sadness when it is not a pup. Divorces, no time for the dog and so on. Life is very unpredictable. You need to take it account when getting a dog. What about the worse case scenario if the dog has extreme behavior problem ? <\/i><\/div>\n

\n5. Dog needs training. Some breeds more than others. Basic training takes a looot of time. What about if your older dog has behavior problem? From my experience solving that takes a lot of time too. It might eventually get easier but not necessary never completely go away. <\/i><\/div>\n

\nand number 6 as a little extra. You need to scoop your dogs poop to a bag and sometimes carry poopbag for quite a while before finding a bin. Do I need to say more? It annoys me and makes me somewhat nauseous to see in the spring when the snow melts and the mounts of dog poos on the side of the road are are revealed. If you dog poos, clean it up. <\/i><\/div>\n

\nBut despite of that all we have always had a dog (not for one month after our staffie passed away) in the  12 years. I doubt there will be a time in our family without a dog. Our “teenager” turned one today. I wrote in September in a post “getting a dog felt like a mistake<\/a>“, that our English toy terrier has been like my therapist. Having cuddles with him has taken my mind off pain and he has made me laugh a lot which has eased difficult days. I have been forced to go for even small walks as he has needed twice a day walks. He is our floppy eared pup despite of having one of his ear taped up- as the breed should have both ears sticking up. Then again, it does not matter. My plans of dog shows with him are well and truly buried due to my ill health. His floppy ears are more than enough for us. <\/i><\/div>\n
